With no formal legal background, Darren’s journey was marked by the very essence of justice itself: resilience in the face of adversity, and a steadfast belief that the law must serve truth above convenience. Time and again, he was met with roadblocks from authorities such as the CCRC and police, organisations resistant to scrutiny. Yet, Darren’s refusal to yield, his belief that justice should not be the preserve of the powerful, fuelled the creation of the United Kingdom’s first pro bono charity dedicated to criminal appeals as Justice on Appeal. His story reminds us that the true spirit of the law is not merely in its statutes, but in the courage to challenge its misuse.

When official channels closed ranks and doors slammed shut, Darren did not falter.
