Origins and Purpose: The Inspiring Journey of Justice on Appeal
A Testament to Justice, Determination, and the Enduring Power of Law
Justice on Appeal stands as a beacon for those who believe in the power of the law to right wrongs and restore faith in the system. Yet, its origins are steeped not in privilege or institutional authority, but in the relentless pursuit of justice by those determined to make the law serve all, not just the favoured few.
Our story began away from the hallowed halls of academia, ignited by Darren Thomas Bolger—a carpenter turned crusader—whose unwavering commitment to fairness was born not of textbooks, but the lived reality of injustice. With no formal legal background, Darren’s journey was marked by the very essence of justice itself: resilience in the face of adversity, and a steadfast belief that the law must serve truth above convenience. Time and again, he was met with roadblocks from authorities such as the CCRC and police, organisations resistant to scrutiny. Yet, Darren’s refusal to yield, his belief that justice should not be the preserve of the powerful, fuelled the creation of the United Kingdom’s first pro bono charity dedicated to criminal appeals as Justice on Appeal. His story reminds us that the true spirit of the law is not merely in its statutes, but in the courage to challenge its misuse.
When official channels closed ranks and doors slammed shut, Darren did not falter. Instead, he drew on the strength of family—working alongside his mother, an ingenious genealogist and researcher—and together they navigated the labyrinth of hidden evidence and half-truths. Their determination exposed manipulated facts and institutional corruption, compelling the system to confront uncomfortable realities. Theirs was an amateur’s fight, but one underpinned by a profound sense of justice, proving that ordinary citizens, when armed with resolve and principle, can hold even the most powerful to account.
Shaping Legal Education Through Real Experience
Justice on Appeal is more than a challenge to the status quo—it is a living example of justice in action, and a rallying point for those who seek to see the law serve the cause of truth. By forging partnerships with law students from esteemed institutions such as City Law, BPP Law School, and Bedford University of Law, Justice on Appeal became a crucible for practical legal education. Here, students step beyond the theory, engaging directly with real cases alongside seasoned solicitors, barristers, and experts. They visit prisons, interview clients, draft briefs and advocate—all while witnessing first-hand the transformative power of determined principled legal work. Under Darren’s mentorship, these aspiring lawyers discovered that the law is not a distant, abstract system, but a dynamic force shaped by those who dare to challenge injustice. Their experiences with Justice on Appeal did not just refine their legal skills—they fostered a lifelong commitment to fairness, integrity, and the tireless pursuit of justice.
It was this passion and authenticity that attracted the attention of campaigners like Gloria Morrison, who entrusted Justice on Appeal with the critical task of scrutinising the controversial law of Joint Enterprise for those who entrusted in her AGENdA. Despite facing political headwinds and institutional interference—including from the Secret Services—Darren and his team pressed on. Their pivotal ‘Key Evidence’ report submitted to the House of Commons Justice Committee played a significant role in driving reform, showing that true justice is achieved not by acclaim, but by perseverance in the face of resistance.
Resilience Against the Odds: A Lesson for All Aspiring Lawyers
Justice is not for the faint-hearted, and Darren’s journey with Justice on Appeal underscores the grit required to champion it. He endured scrutiny, intimidation, and even wrongful arrest when the appeal work began to threaten established interests and expose systemic corruption. Through each ordeal—be it baseless allegations, legal manoeuvring, or concerted efforts to tarnish his name—Darren stood resolute, acutely aware that the pursuit of justice demands not only intellect but profound moral courage.
Perhaps most telling was his endurance during a daunting 17-week trial, marred by the concealment of exonerating evidence and judicial misdirection. Even when conviction followed, Darren’s belief in the law’s capacity for righting wrongs never faltered. Ultimately, he cleared his name and earned a Badge of Honour for his service to the community—a recognition not just of his actions, but of the indomitable spirit that defines true justice. The later revelation of covert surveillance and targeting by intelligence agencies only underscored the magnitude of the injustice he sought to overcome, and the necessity of unwavering determination in the struggle for fairness.
A New Era: Harnessing Technology for Justice
Unbowed by past challenges, Darren has revitalised Justice on Appeal as a limited company, steering it into an era defined by innovation and possibility. By embracing advanced technology—including MAAT, an AI legal assistant he himself developed—Justice on Appeal is broadening its reach beyond criminal appeals, now addressing contract, bankruptcy, health, family, and media law. This fusion of technological advancement with the enduring values of justice and determination marks a proud new chapter for the movement, ensuring that help is within reach for all who need it, and empowering future legal minds to carry the torch of justice forward.
